After each keynote revealing a new model, the resell value of Apple Phones plummets, therefore if you want to obtain a good price for an old iPhone, sell it before the introduction.
Apple’s iPhone 13 was just released. If you want the new phone, selling your old one might have helped you pay for it – but you had to act quickly because it is too late now!
The following routine occurs for many iPhone users at this time of year: the new iPhone is released, the new model is purchased, the data from the previous iPhone is transferred, and the old phone is resold – generally via eBay or a purchasing service.
Selling your Phone shortly after an Apple keynote, on the other hand, is the incorrect time to do it because prices tend to drop following the keynote. In fact, secondhand prices for the iPhone X and XR plummeted soon before Apple’s iPhone 11 event in 2019 and then plummeted even more for a few days afterwards – which isn’t unexpected considering that Apple dropped the iPhone XR’s pricing from £749/$749 to £629/$599 at the keynote.
In 2020, Apple did something similar with the iPhone 11 and the XR, lowering the price of the XR while also lowering the price of the iPhone 11 series.
If Apple continues to offer that device at a lower price, the price drops are likely to be higher – if the price of a new version of the phone you’re selling isn’t much more than what you’re advertising your used model for, you won’t be able to sell it for as much as you’d want.
If Apple retains the iPhone 12 series in its lineup this year, retailers may face the same problems. Although Apple is unlikely to keep the whole iPhone 12 lineup on the market, we believe it will continue to be sold, but the Pro, Pro Max, and small variants will be phased out. This might make these phones more desired, causing their costs to rise. If Apple stops selling those phones, there will undoubtedly be a surge in demand for them.
You could also have a greater chance of selling an iPhone with more storage capacity because Apple tends to abandon high-capacity phones from prior generations when it releases new phone models. So, if you’re looking to sell a 512GB iPhone 12 Pro or Max, you’ll most likely be able to obtain a good deal.
But don’t put off your sale: on average, iPhones lose value month after month. So, while selling your phone soon after it is released may have minimal impact on the sale price, waiting half a year will result in a significant loss of value.
With all of this in mind, we recommend that if you want to purchase a new upcoming Apple phone, you sell your current one before the launch. This way, you’ll be able to get the most money out of it.
The good news is that iPhones keep their value better than Androids, so you should be able to make decent money if you decide to sell.
