How to track your sleep with Apple Watch?

Sleep is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle, but it is often easier said than done for many people. Most of us probably don’t get enough sleep or have many interruptions during the night. A lack of quality sleep can cause (or exacerbate) other health problems that can disrupt your overall life and well-being in the long run. That is why, whenever possible, you should try tracking your sleep, as this allows you to analyze your sleep patterns every night — and if any problems arise during your sleep, they can be addressed.

If you own an Apple Watch, you have a built-in sleep tracker on your wrist that will assist you in monitoring and recording your sleep patterns each night. The sleep tracking feature is compatible with Apple Watch Series 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 models, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra, as long as watchOS 7 or higher is installed. You’ll also need an iPhone 6S or later running iOS 14 or higher.

When you wear your compatible Apple Watch to bed, it will track the amount of time you sleep. When you wake up in the morning, the Sleep app will show you the times you were actually asleep during the night, and the Health app will keep track of your daily and weekly sleep patterns.

Now that you understand the fundamentals, we’ll show you how to track your sleep using only the Apple Watch.

How to set up sleep tracking on your Apple Watch

You can track your sleep patterns on your Apple Watch by using the Sleep app to set sleep goals. The Sleep app tracks how much sleep you got in the morning. It will also track your sleeping patterns for 14 days. Any changes made to your Apple Watch’s parameters will be reflected on your iPhone.

  1. Open the Sleep app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap the Sleep app to see instructions for setting up a sleep goal and scheduling your bedtime, wake time, wake up alarm, and reminders.

How to add a sleep schedule to your Apple Watch

  1. Open the Sleep app and scroll to Full schedule.
  2. Turn on the Sleep schedule toggle switch.
  3. Create your initial schedule. Every day appears as the first option, and you can keep your sleep schedule on every day.
  4. You can remove any day or days from a wake-up alarm, but if you’re tracking sleep, you’ll probably want all days covered.
  5. Press the Alarm button to program a wake-up time.
  6. Using your watch’s Digital Crown, adjust the time on the alarm clock face, and then tap the green Checkmark at the bottom right to confirm the time.
  7. Scroll down to Bedtime and set it in the same manner.

How to view other sleep options on your Apple Watch

  1. Set a sleep goal. Set the number of hours you want to sleep by tapping Sleep goal.
  2. Enabling sleep tracking allows you to track how well you are meeting your sleep goals. When you enable sleep tracking, your watch tracks your sleep and saves it to your iPhone’s Health app.
  3. Selecting an alarm allows you to select from a variety of custom watch wake-up sound effects. Toggle Alarm on or off, and then tap Sound and haptics to select an alarm sound. If your watch is set to silent, it will tap your wrist to wake you up but will not make any noise.
  4. Enabling the Wind down option activates the sleep focus feature, which turns off the watch display and activates do not disturb so you are not bothered by notifications while sleeping.
  5.  Configure the Sleep screen so that you are not disturbed while sleeping. Your watch display and iPhone lock screen are simplified and dimmed when the sleep screen is enabled.
  6. By scrolling through the Sleep app, you can see if you’ve met your sleep goals.
  7.  You can view your sleep statistics directly on the Apple Watch for up to 14 days. View the iPhone Health app for more information. It tracks respiratory data in addition to stats by going to Browse > Respiratory > Respiratory rate > Show more respiratory rate data.

Things to keep in mind:

However, before using your Apple Watch for sleep tracking, you should be aware of the battery level. By the end of the day, your Apple Watch may have depleted its battery. For sleep tracking to work, you’ll need to set aside some time during the day to charge your Apple Watch to at least 30% (probably best to charge while you’re in the shower or something). If your Apple Watch is less than 30% charged, it will notify you to charge it before going to bed.
