AirPods are currently the most popular earbuds on the market, particularly among iPhone users. However, as with all earbuds — and all devices — they become dirty over time and must be cleaned.
Not only do AirPods become clogged with earwax, but they also collect grime when they get lost under your car seat. And, of course, anything you touch on a daily basis will accumulate germs and grease.
Cleaning your AirPods and their case is simple.
You’ll need at least one lint-free cloth, some water, and a fine-edged tool like a toothpick or pin to clean your AirPods and case. If there are stubborn stains, you may also require some rubbing alcohol.
A soft lint-free cleaning cloth — ideally, a microfiber cloth — and a tool with a fine end are required to clean your AirPods. A toothpick, dental floss stick, bobby pin, needle, or other household item with a fine edge can be used. If you don’t want to use anything sharp, a cotton swab will suffice.
First, lightly dampen the lint-free cloth and wipe the outside of the earbuds. Then, dry the earbuds with another dry lint-free cloth, being careful not to get liquid in any of the openings.
Grab a fine-edged tool or a dry cotton swab to remove earwax from the speaker hole of your earbuds. Carefully remove the earwax, paying special attention to the edges of the speaker. Be careful not to cut yourself or pierce the speaker if you use a sharp object.
You’ll also need to clean the silicone tips that cover each earbud’s speaker if you have AirPods Pro.
Rinse the silicone tips that cover your AirPods Pro earbuds in water. Add no soap or other household cleaners. Wipe them dry with a soft, lint-free cloth until completely dry. Reattach them to the AirPods once they’ve dried.
Pull firmly from the base of the tip, where it is connected to the earbud, to remove the tips of an AirPod Pro. To reconnect it, align the tip with the oval-shaped connectors on the earbud’s speakers and push it in firmly. Once you’ve aligned the connectors, it should click together easily.
To clean an AirPods case, remove the AirPods and wipe the outside of the case with a dry, lint-free cloth.
You can dampen the cloth with alcohol for tougher spots, but make sure to dry the spots afterwards. Make sure there is no moisture inside the AirPod holders or the charging port of the case. Use a soft bristle brush to remove debris from the charging port.
Use a soft bristle brush or a soft toothbrush to clean the inside of the case; the bristles will help dig dirt out of the nooks and crannies.
