Unfortunately, the price of your smartphone does not protect it from accidents. I recently upgraded to the iPhone 14 Pro and promptly dropped it. Dropping your phone in the toilet, on the other hand, appears to be a far worse fate, and it happens to 23% of people, according to Secure Data Recovery, a data recovery service. And what if you have no idea how to recover your device? That’s one way to waste your money.
While many smartphones are water-resistant, they are not waterproof, so it is still necessary to dry your phone. Here are three methods for drying out your phone after dropping it in water, hopefully saving you from having to buy a new one.
Unfortunately, none of these methods are guaranteed to work, and while there is a lot of anecdotal evidence, there have been very few scientific studies on the subject. Gazelle, a company that buys and sells used and broken phones, conducted the most recent study we could find in 2014. According to that study, the make and model of phone were discovered to have an impact on whether or not a phone could be repaired, with Android phones typically faring better than iPhones.
According to sources, getting your phone out of the water as soon as possible helps by reducing the amount of water that comes into contact with your device. If you follow these instructions and your phone does not turn on, or it turns on but has some problems, you should contact a repair shop to detect the issue.
Both phone manufacturers offer some advice to users in the event that their phone is dropped in water.
1. Take your iPhone out of the water, turn it off, and wipe it down with a soft, lint-free cloth.
2. Gently tap your phone with the Lightning port facing down to remove any excess water.
3. Leave your iPhone in a dry, well-ventilated area for at least five hours. A fan pointed at your iPhone’s Lightning port might help.
After five hours, restart your phone and check how it is working. If you’re still having problems, scroll down to the bottom of this page.

1. Remove your phone from the water, turn it off, and dry it with a clean cloth or a dry towel.
2. Place your phone in a well-ventilated area or in the shade with a fan blowing cool air on it. However, no time limit is specified by Samsung.
According to Samsung, even after you’ve followed these steps, there may still be water inside your phone, so bring it to a Samsung Electronics Service Center.
Both manufacturers also recommend that if you drop your phone in a liquid other than clean water, such as soda or pool water, you quickly rinse it with tap water before drying it with a towel and then air drying it.
Apple and Samsung advise against using a heating source, such as a blow dryer or oven, to dry your phone. The heat may cause your phone to malfunction.

You could also experiment with silica gel. According to Gazelle, silica gel beads are an excellent choice for absorbing moisture from phones. Silica gel beads are found in the white packs labeled “Do not eat” that many products come in. You can save these packs from packages you’ve received or purchase them from online retailers such as Amazon or companies such as Dry & Dry.
After you’ve obtained your silica, here’s what you should do if you drop your phone in water.
1. Remove your phone from the water and switch it off.
2. Using a lint-free towel, dry the outside of your phone.
3. Put your phone in a big container.
4. Fill the container halfway with silica gel beads and seal it.
5. Gazelle suggests waiting 72 hours for your phone to dry.
6. Take your phone out of the container and try to turn it back on.
If you don’t have silica gel beads, you could experiment with other household items. Gazelle discovered that couscous and instant rice work well as drying agents.
Replace the silica beads in the previous section with either of these, wait the same amount of time, and then try restarting your device.
Gazelle also tested conventional cat litter, oats, chia seeds, and uncooked white rice, but does not recommend them because they leave debris behind that could damage your phone.
