Facebook is considering entering the wristwatch business, according to a recent article from The Verge. The Facebook app suite, which includes the Facebook app, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, will supposedly contain two detachable cameras that can be propped up anywhere users see fit to record photographs and movies that can then be shared throughout the Facebook app suite.
Both front-facing and rear-mounted cameras will be housed in a stainless steel case on the Facebook Watch (tentative name). The front-facing camera is claimed to be used largely for video chats, while the rear camera has autofocus and can record up to 1080p video. The watch will also measure all of the usual health and fitness metrics, such as heart rate.
Elsewhere, The Facebook Watch is reported to include LTE connection, allowing it to function without the use of a smartphone. It will be available in white, black, and gold. The wearable is slated to hit the market in 2022, with a suggested retail price of $400. According to reports, Facebook has made contact with third-party accessory manufacturers to bring on goods compatible with the watch’s detachable cameras, such as backpacks and cases.
