If you own an Apple MacBook Pro Retina model manufactured between mid-2012 and mid-2015, you are no stranger to the problem of a layer of “dirt” on your MacBook Retina screen that you cannot clean or remove. MacBook staingate users are experiencing frustration while using their MacBook’s due to the staingate issue. It appears to be a layer of dirt, but attempting to wipe it away proves nearly impossible. Some even went so far as to replace the entire display unit. However, some of the newer Retina models, including the MacBook Pro from 2016 to 2018 and the MacBook Air from 2018, are experiencing a similar issue.

What is a staingate issue?

This problem usually occurs on the screen of the MacBook Pro, which is not removable through regular cleaning. It is a manufacturing flaw. The stain appears to be caused by the anti-reflective coating peeling off, according to a closer inspection. The anti-reflective coating appears to be wearing off under a variety of conditions, including pressure from the keyboard keys and trackpad after the display has been closed. When the problem first appears, the peeling spreads to different areas of the screen over time. Because the anti-reflective coating is peeling off, the screen has more glare in the areas where it is missing.

What are the causes?

The cause of the MacBook staingate issue on the Retina MacBook Pro and MacBook Air is still unknown. According to our research, MacBook Staingate could be caused by heat and abrasion.

Based on our research, the following are some of the possible causes of the Staingate issue on your MacBook:

  1. Excessive touching of the display – Oil and sweat residue on the trackpad and keyboard when the lid is closed.
  2. Heat generated by the CPU Fan
  3. Make Use of a Powerful Display Cleaner

How to get rid of this issue?

Several tech news outlets reported in October 2015 that Apple had launched a “quality program” in which the entire screen panel of the affected laptop could be replaced for free. According to reports, the program applied to affected units manufactured in 2013, 2014, or 2015 for up to four years after the machine was purchased. Apple announced in November 2017 that the screen replacement program would be extended. If Apple has certified that the machine is ineligible for the replacement program, you can use the techniques listed below.

The number of successful cases of staingate removal on affected MacBook Pro Retina models is impressive. However, please remember that you are doing so AT YOUR OWN RISK.
